This paper will discuss Edgar Allan Poe's unity of effect. This paper will also illustrates this theory in the works, "The Pit and the Pendulum," and "The Fall of the House of Usher." Through this paper, it will be known how this great writer inspired unity throughout his works through the setting, character description and narration that is weaved through his works. His talent was strong enough to direct his life, yet the constant emphasis on ancient family and on rich and costly surroundings in his stories indicates that the expensive tastes nurtured in him when young never changed. His disappointment in love, the loss of a gentleman's estate and the constant recurrence of death in Poe's family undoubtedly heightened Poe's morbid preoccupation. His own vivid sense of the dramatic and his restless nature that craved excitement, account for the startling situations in his stories.

It is a story about a people who were in the difficult process of undergoing drastic cultural change. It is a period marked by conflict and violent cultural and political clashes. This time period, leading up to South Africa's first free election, was a time when tensions were running extremely high, not only between black South Africans and white Afrikaners, but also inter-racially, as opposing political parties jockeyed for campaign position. The film is presented in a three part series and was first broadcast in South Africa in July of 1994, a time when the feelings and emotions surrounding the issue were still very fresh.

1704.329 An Analysis of Into the Woods.
This paper discusses the fairy tale musical, "Into the Woods." One of the many brilliant Sondheim lyrics in Into the Woods sums up this thesis better than I ever could. In the show's Finale, the Company sings, "Careful the wish you make, Wishes are children. Careful the path they take - Wishes come true, Not free" (136). What we wish for isn't always necessarily what we really want, but sometimes it takes a wish coming true to come to that realization.

1705.353 The Secrets of Life in Poetry.
This paper discusses how the secrets of life can often be found in poetry. . We don't know the meaning of life. We don't know the secrets of love. We don't know what happens to us after we die. We don't know the answers to any of these burning questions, but after examining the work of such poets as Homer, Virgil, Ovid and Shakespeare, one can't help but feel they are somehow closer to the answers. People often turn to poetry when everyday language isn't enough to express what they think or feel. Poetry can be comforting in times of sorrow and ecstatic in times of joy. But there is much more to poetry than just the expression of emotions.

1706.363 An Analysis of The Metamorphosis.
This paper discusses the story of Gregor Samsa in The Metamorphosis. Gregor reacts to his metamorphosis not with horror or anger or self-pity, but rather with an almost numb practicality. And his greatest concern is not that he now found himself changed into a "monstrous vermin", but rather that he is late for work and will undoubtedly have to answer to everyone as to why. Indeed, such a physical change, he may have thought, did not necessarily afford him with the lifestyle change that he so desired. And in essence, the fact that he was now a big bug actually did very little to change anything. A cynical man might sum up the situation by saying, "He was miserable before, and he's miserable now. Where's the change in that?"
