This ten-page undergraduate paper examines correctional policies and the value of rehabilitation. The author notes that the recent trend towards harsh sentencing and the increasing use of capital punishment have primarily been due to political posturing and to the general public?s frustration that nothing the government does seems to prove effective in reducing crime. Until rehabilitation advocates can make a stronger case for rehabilitation, the present trend towards tougher sentencing and increased use of the death penalty will continue.

626.20259 Euthanasia: An Argument for Legalization
This four-page undergraduate paper argues that doctor assisted suicide should be legalized as soon as possible. The author constructs a clear statement of his position and supports his thesis with documented sources, examines the arguments for and against euthanasia, and concludes that the right of a person to die should take precedence over other conflicting rights. In the final analysis, terminally ill human beings have the primary and inherent right to refuse medical treatment, for they are the ultimate moral guardians of their own lives and thus the most important authority to be considered; not doctors, lawyers, insurance companies, nor the government.

629.20448 The Poverty Spiral and the Breakdown of Social Order: The Causal Relationship Between Poverty and Crime
This paper shall examine the relationship between poverty in an urban neighborhood setting and the crime rate. Historically, neighborhoods experiencing extreme poverty have been seen to experience above average crime rates, especially in violent crime. The traditional view has been that this is a symptom of economic need, that crimes are performed to augment or replace income. However, this would not explain the preponderance of violent crime to which there is no benefit to the offender by the crime?s commission. A survey of the available literature shall show that the nature of the causal relationship between crime and poverty may, in fact, find its origin in the social alienation of poverty.
